The Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (Kalahi-CIDSS) paid tribute to its community volunteers and other partners during the 2024 National Bayani Ka! Awards on Thursday (October 10) at the Sequoia Hotel in Quezon City.
With this year’s theme, “Tayog: Paglilingkod, Pagmamalasakit, Paninindigan para sa Bayan,” the National Bayani Ka! Awards is an annual event that aims to celebrate the lives of community volunteers and recognize their efforts and contributions to the overall initiatives of KALAHI-CIDSS, the agency’s community-driven development (CDD) program.
In her keynote message, DSWD Undersecretary for Operations Group Monina Josefina Romualdez acknowledged the vital contributions of the program’s community volunteers towards uplifting the condition of disadvantaged communities in the country.
“The heart and soul of the KALAHI-CIDSS are our volunteers. These unsung heroes tirelessly work on the ground, directly engaging with the communities we serve. Their dedication is what makes the program a success, and their efforts are a testament to the power of community-driven development,” Undersecretary Romualdez said.
For this year, KALAHI-CIDSS awarded 14 outstanding community volunteers and partners for their notable contributions in embodying the tenets of the CDD approach in their respective communities.
The winners were the Castilla Fisherfolk Marketing Cooperative from Castilla, Sorsogon for Best Operations and Maintenance Group Category; the Tulay sa Tibo People’s Participation from Gubat, Sorsogon for the Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Environment Protection Category; Eva Marie Matillano Garde from Alamada, Cotabato for the Gender and Development Category; Hawudon Nelbert Sahay from Soriano, Tagbina, Surigao del Sur for the Indigenous Peoples’ Welfare Category; Daisy Albao from San Dionisio, Iloilo for the Volunteerism Category; and Junfhel Pati-an from San Isidro, Davao Oriental for the Exceptional Youth Volunteer Category.
Four winners were awarded under the Exceptional Senior Citizens Volunteer Category. They were Purita Labay from Torrijos, Marinduque; Johnny Arellano from Sara, Iloilo; Largo LanaJa Adlawan from Makilala, North Cotabato; and, Virginia Cuzares from Barobo, Surigao del Sur.
For the Exceptional Person with Disability Volunteer Category, the winners were Genoveva Muyco from Monreal, Masbate; Bengie Osman from Balasan, Iloilo; and, Quinciano Trimidal from Barobo, Surigao del Sur.
The local government unit (LGU) of Gloria, Oriental Mindoro received the award for the Improved Local Governance Category for passing ordinances and local resolutions that emphasize and reinforce the principles of CDD in their locality.
Joining Undersecretary Romualdez in conferring the awards on the winners were Asst. Secretary Florentino Loyola, Jr and KALAHI-CIDSS National Program Manager, Director Bernadette Mapue-Joaquin.
The KALAHI-CIDSS is a poverty alleviation program that utilizes the CDD approach to empower poor communities and improve their quality of life.
