The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is ready to provide psychosocial support to the female minor student who was seen being manhandled by a security guard in a video that has since gone viral in social media.

DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian on Thursday (January 16) directed the Field Office – National Capital Region to seek out the family of the minor who was selling sampaguita in front of the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

“We do not tolerate hurting a child. We will seek out the child and her family in order to provide psychosocial support and other possible interventions to keep her out of the streets selling sampaguita,” Secretary Gatchalian said.

The DSWD chief said the FO-NCR was also tasked to talk to the SM management for the possible provision of assistance in training their employees on how to treat children who are in similar situation as seen in the viral video.

“We will also be looking for the concerned security guard to lecture him on how to treat children kindly so we can prevent similar incidents of manhandling from happening again,” Secretary Gatchalian said.

DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao said there is a need to collectively ensure that children are protected from all forms of abuse and exploitation.

“It takes a village to raise a child. Kaya kasama ang family and immediate community na dapat nagbabantay sa mga bata,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao said. #
