Amid the rising number of recorded seismic activities of Mt. Kanlaon, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has assured that in any eventuality, the agency is ready to assist the Canlaon local government unit (LGU) in disaster response and relief operation.
In a report to DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian on Tuesday (September 10), Field Office (FO) 7-Central Visayas Regional Director Shalaine Marie Lucero said the FO is working closely with the LGU of Canlaon for the emergency response plan.
“Also Sec, we are having refresher sessions with QRT members to be deployed to the area as needed,” Director Lucero told Secretary Gatchalian in her report.
DSWD FO 6-Western Visayas Regional Director Carmelo Nochete also reported to Secretary Gatchalian that the FO has a total of 32,990 boxes of FFPs in Bacolod City, while there are more than 37,000 food packs prepositioned in warehouses in the different localities around Negros Occidental.
In Canlaon City, close to 7,000 boxes of FFPs have been prepositioned on top of non-food items such as hygiene, family, kitchen and sleeping kits as well as modular tents, according to Director Nochete.
In Negros Oriental, some 14,000 FFPs are stockpiled in the DSWD warehouse in Dumaguete City, while 3,400 boxes of FFPs are in the agency’s storage facility in Vallehermoso town.
“As much as possible, we hope that an eruption wouldn’t occur at all. Nonetheless, we are ensuring that we have abundant supplies, particularly in nearby LGUs that are most vulnerable to abrupt seismic activities,” DSWD Assistant Secretary for Disaster Response Management Group (DRMG) Irene Dumlao, who is also the agency spokesperson, said.
In an advisory sent shortly before noon today, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said 288 volcano-tectonic earthquakes have been recorded since midnight.
“We are taking necessary steps to open our line of communication with concerned local government units. Our quick response teams are also ready for deployment. Because again, Secretary Gatchalian always tells us to prepare for the worst,” the DSWD spokesperson said. #
