Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian visited evacuation centers in Camarines Sur on Friday (October 25) to assess the condition of internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Kristine.
Joining the DSWD chief in his rounds at the Jesse M. Robredo Coliseum Evacuation Center, the Triangulo Evacuation Center, and the Sta. Cruz Evacuation Center were Disaster Response Management Group (DRMG ) Asst. Secretary Irene Dumlao and Field Office5-Bicol Regional Director Norman Laurio.
The DSWD officials were also accompanied by Camarines Sur Governor Luigi Villafuerte, 2nd District Representative Lray Villafuerte, 3rd District Representative Gabriel Bordado, and Naga City Mayor Nelson Legacion who shared the challenges faced by the local government units (LGUs) in their response operations for STS Kristine.
During his rounds at the evacuation centers, the DSWD chief also led the distribution of family food packs (FFPs) to the evacuees.
Secretary Gatchalian also granted a short interview with the local media where he shared the DSWD’s plans to help the province recover from the effects of Kristine.
“Ang assurance namin, sa probinsya, kay Governor Luigi pati na rin kay Congressman Villafuerte, may sapat tayong goods na nandito na sa Bicol para matustusan ang pangangailangan ng mga taga-Camarines Sur,” Secretary Gatchalian told members of the local press.
“Nakipag-pulong kami kay Mayor Legacion at yun din ang aming commitment, yung hinihingi nya na 30,000 na family food packs, nandito na iyon sa Naga at pwedeng ma-withdraw sa kanyang convenience, meaning kung kailangan na nya, ready rin kami mag-deploy,” Secretary
Gatchalian said.
Secretary Gatchalian also mentioned that the agency will provide financial assistance in the coming days as part of the recovery phase of the disaster response operations for STS Kristine.
“Nakahanda naman ang DSWD the moment na makuha namin yung listahan ng mga nasa province pati na rin yung nasa siyudad ng Naga ay nakahanda rin kami sa financial assistance kasi sabi nga ng Pangulo, naiintindihan na kailangan magsimula muli ng ating mga kababayan, maayos ang kanilang mga tahanan at ang kanilang mga nasira na mga ari-arian,” the DSWD chief explained.
On orders from President Marcos, Secretary Gatchalian flew to Camarines Sur on Friday morning to monitor the ground situation and the on-going disaster operations across the Bicol Region which was severely battered by STS Kristine.#

Binanggit din ni Secretary Gatchalian na magbibigay ang ahensya ng financial assistance sa mga darating na araw, bukod pa sa pamamahagi ng FFPs. Ang financial assistance ay parte ng recovery phase ng disaster response operations.
