This bunkhouse in Baganga, Davao Oriental, will soon house families affected by typhoon ‘Pablo’ as the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) fast tracks the construction of the temporary shelters.

Families affected by typhoon ‘Pablo’ will soon be housed in temporary shelters before the year ends as the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) fast tracks the construction of 81 bunkhouses amounting to P81 million in Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley.

Of the 81 bunkhouses, 60 will be built in Baganga, Boston and Cateel in Davao Oriental while 21 will be constructed in Compostela, Monkayo, New Bataan, and Montevista in Compostela Valley.

A bunkhouse measures 7.4 x 24 meters with galvanized roofing and marine plywood walling with concrete slab flooring. Each will have 20 rooms with separate bathrooms for male and female.

The DSWD has also deployed DSWD engineers in Baganga, Cateel, and Boston in Davao Oriental, and Compostela, Compostela Valley to supervise the construction of the temporary shelters while the provincial government of Compostela Valley will oversee the building of the bunkhouses in New Bataan, Montevista, and Monkayo.

Moreover, typhoon-affected families are being tapped to help in clearing the area and building the bunkhouses under the Cash-for-Work Program. Each family-beneficiary will be paid P218 a day.

The bunkhouses will be used as temporary dwelling places in disaster-hit areas as the national government will eventually build permanent shelters for them. ###
