Amid continuous relief operations for victims of typhoon ‘Pablo’ in Region XI, the Department of Social Welfare and Development also has its hands full as it attends to the needs of 10,318 families with 39,938 persons affected by floodings due to continuous heavy rains since January 20.
The affected areas are Davao City; Kapalong and Sto. Tomas in Davao del Norte; New Bataan, Nabunturan, Maco, Mawab, Monkayo and Montevista in Compostela Valley; and Cateel in Davao Oriental.
Thirty-six evacuation centers have been activated in the affected provinces.
Rescue operations were conducted in flooded barangays in the municipalities of Sto. Tomas and Kapalong, Davao Del Norte. As of January 20, 8 p.m., about 5,107 families coming from the affected barangays sought temporary shelter in 13 evacuations centers. Intake interview and masterlisting are being conducted by the concerned local government units (LGUs) to determine the actual number of affected families.
Likewise in Davao City, about 3,000 families were affected and sheltered temporarily in seven evacuation centers. The rescued families were initially provided with family packs by DSWD Region XI coursed through Congressman Mylene Garcia-Albano with 2,500 packs, and Congressman Karlo Nograles with 4,500 packs. The delivered food packs were used for community cooking. Additional 6,700 food packs containing 15 kilos of rice, eight cans of sardines, four cans of beef loaf, and 12 sachets of 3-in-1 coffee per pack were also distributed to victims in Davao City.
Some 180 families were also evacuated in Barangay Bulla East in Nabunturan, Compostela Valley.
The DSWD is set to release food packs to the affected families in Davao del Norte, and Compostela Valley anytime today.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Monitoring Council (PDRRMC) of Davao del Norte reported that the flooding affected areas not previously devastated by typhoon ‘Pablo.’
In Region XII, Pulangi River overflowed and flooded areas in Kabakan and Matalam. No evacuation, however, has been reported. The DSWD in Region XII is closely coordinating with the provincial local government for provision of appropriate intervention. ###
