The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has now more than 2 million boxes of family food packs (FFPs) ready for augmentation to local governments units (LGUs) needing assistance for their disaster operations, an official of the Disaster Response Management Group (DRMG) said on Friday (October 11).
Assistant Secretary for DRMG Irene Dumlao, who is also the DSWD’s spokesperson, said the 2 million boxes are so far the highest number of FFPs prepositioned in the agency’s warehouses nationwide.
“The FFPs are continuously being produced to ensure availability of relief goods whenever a disaster or emergency occurs,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao said.
Based on the October 9 report of the agency’s Disaster Response Operations Management, Information and Communication (DROMIC), there are more than 200,000 boxes of FFPs in the
DSWD’s National Resource Operations Center (NROC).
The NROC, located in Pasay City, is the DSWD’s main disaster response hub.
In the Visayas, the DSWD’s Visayas Disaster Resource Center (VDRC) in Mandaue City, Cebu has a total of 247,765 FFPs ready for distribution to requesting LGUs as the need arises.
Aside from NROC and VDRC, the DSWD also manages storage facilities in the different regions.
According to the DRMG asst. secretary, these warehouses are crucial in providing immediate relief assistance to families and individuals affected by calamities or disasters.
“We reiterate that disaster preparation in the DSWD is year-round. The replenishment of FFPs is part of the proactive measure being taken by the DSWD. We always ensure that there are enough FFPs especially that our disaster response for Super Typhoon Julian, Mt. Kanlaon eruption, and other recent calamities is still ongoing,” the DSWD spokesperson pointed out.
Asst. Secretary Dumlao emphasized that LGUs are the first responders in disasters and calamities, as stipulated in Republic Act (RA) 10121 or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010.
