The Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Field Office 8 – Eastern Visayas gave due recognition to the tutors and youth development workers (YDWs) who participated in the implementation of Tara Basa! Tutoring Program in the province of Samar.
In a ceremony held on Tuesday (September 17), which served as the culminating activity to wrap up the Tara Basa in the Samar province, FO – 8 Regional Director Grace Subong lauded the college students of Northwest Samar State University (NWSSU) for their service and contribution to the program.
“There is one thing in common from all the messages and testimonies I heard from our stakeholders and beneficiaries, that the program made a significant impact on the lives of our learners, parents, and students,” Director Subong said.
Director Subong led the distribution of Certificates of Recognition and tokens to the student-tutors and YDWs.
In the province of Samar, the Tara Basa Program benefitted a total of 375 college students from the NWSSU and Samar State University.
They received cash-for-work (CFW) based on the prevailing regional daily minimum wage in exchange for rendering 20 tutoring and learning sessions from July 1-26.
Under the Tara Basa Program, they were trained to become tutors and YDWs and were deployed in select elementary schools to help improve the reading proficiency of elementary students and hold Nanay-Tatay teacher sessions for parents and guardians of the grade school beneficiaries.
The tutors and YDWs have assisted a total of 1,981 learners, and 1,977 parents across two cities and 19 municipalities in the province.
The Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program is the DSWD’s reformatted educational assistance that creates a learning ecosystem, wherein college students will be capacitated and deployed as tutors and YDWs to help improve the reading proficiency of elementary students who are struggling to read or are non-readers.
A total of 120,359 college students, struggling and non-reader elementary learners, and parents from the National Capital Region (NCR), Regions 3 (Central Luzon), 7 (Central Visayas), 8 (Eastern Visayas), 10 (Northern Mindanao), 12 (SOCCSKSARGEN), and CALABARZON participated in the tutoring program.#
